The records on The Money Baller (the picks bar, handicapper pages, members’ public tracking pages and the leaderboard) are worked out by the rules below. Past results do not guarantee future results, and nothing here is betting advice.
Two kinds of record
- Baller Picks are the plays our handicappers publish. Each is filed under the date of its game, with the line and price it was published at.
- Tracked bets are bets members record on the site. A tracked bet takes the line and price we last captured from the sportsbook the member picked, at the moment it is tracked; a price the member types in is marked unverified. A tracked bet cannot be added, changed or removed once its game starts (a parlay, once its first game starts), and members never enter their own results.
Results
- Every pick ends as a Win, a Loss or a Push. Until then it shows as Open (before the game), Live (up to four hours after the start) or Pending.
- A Push is a result exactly on the number (a spread or total landed on), or a moneyline game that ends tied. A push returns the stake and counts neither as a win nor a loss.
- Picks are graded automatically from final scores. A score is taken the night of the game only when two independent sources agree the game is final; the official scores arrive the next morning and are checked against it.
- A first-half, first-quarter, first-period or first-five-innings pick is graded on the score of that part of the game.
- A pick on a game that is postponed, suspended or cancelled stays pending; if the game is not played, it is settled by hand, as sportsbooks settle it.
Parlays, teasers and player props
- A parlay loses if any leg loses. A leg that pushes, or a player who does not play, drops out, and the parlay is paid at the price of the legs that won, as sportsbooks settle it. A parlay whose every leg pushes is a push.
- Teasers are graded like parlays.
- Player props are graded on the player’s official box score for the game. A result exactly on the line is a push; a player who does not play is a push.
Units, records and ROI
- A pick’s units are the amount risked. A win pays at the pick’s price (at -110, 1 unit wins 0.91), a loss loses the units risked, and a push pays nothing.
- A pick recorded without a price is settled at -110.
- Win percentage is wins divided by wins plus losses; pushes are left out.
- ROI is net units divided by the units risked on wins and losses.
- Futures and cash-outs (buyouts) are left out of every record.
Closing line value (CLV)
CLV compares the price of a pick with the market’s closing price for the same side: the win probability implied by the sportsbooks’ closing line (vig included, carried to the pick’s own line where the line moved), minus the win probability implied by the pick’s price, in points. A positive CLV means the pick got a better price than the close. It is not shown for player props, parlays (teasers count as 0), live bets or picks without a price.
The leaderboard
The leaderboard ranks members’ public tracking pages and our handicappers. A member is ranked after 20 graded bets in the period shown, must be a current member, and only bets whose prices we captured ourselves count.
When a pick is locked, and corrections
A Baller Pick is posted before its game starts, and the time it was posted is recorded. Once the game starts the pick is locked: it cannot be added, changed, deleted or moved by anyone using the normal tools. When a grade or a pick is wrong (a score corrected after the fact, a pick entered with a mistake), a site administrator can correct it, but only by stating a reason, and every such change is kept in a log with who made it, when, what it was before and after, and why. The record updates when a correction is made. We do not yet publish that log, and the records are not independently audited.
