Commentary: The 2024 season marks a new era for the Los Angeles Chargers as they welcome Jim Harbaugh as their head coach. Harbaugh, known for his intense coaching style and ability to turn programs around, brings hope to a franchise that struggled mightily last season. The Chargers finished 2023 with a disappointing 5-12 record, plagued by injuries, underperformance and a lack of consistency on both sides of the ball.

The departure of key offensive weapons like Mike Williams, Keenan Allen, and Austin Ekeler leaves a significant void in their offense.

Harbaugh’s arrival is expected to bring a culture shift to the team, with an emphasis on toughness and discipline. On the defensive side, the Chargers were inconsistent last season, ranking 24th in EPA/play allowed, with notable struggles in pass defense. The addition of linebacker Denzel Perryman brings some experience and leadership to the defense, which will be critical as they aim to improve upon last year’s rankings.

While Harbaugh’s coaching prowess could bring some much-needed structure and improvement, the personnel losses and the time required for a new system to take hold suggest that the Chargers might face another challenging season.
