Commentary: The Miami Dolphins enter the 2024 season as one of the league’s most intriguing teams, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. Under head coach Mike McDaniel, now in his third season, the Dolphins fielded an explosive offense in 2023, ranking in the top five for both passing and rushing EPA. The addition of O’Dell Beckham Jr. adds another dynamic weapon to an already potent offense, which was nearly unstoppable at times last season. We foresee plenty of shootouts this season.
However, despite their offensive firepower, the Dolphins struggled mightily against top-tier competition, as evidenced by their 1-5 ATS record against teams with a winning percentage above 55%. This inconsistency against stronger opponents highlights a key area of concern as Miami looks to cement itself as a true contender in the AFC.
Defensively, the Dolphins have undergone significant changes, including replacing DC Vic Fangio with Anthony Weaver. It will be important to see how quickly the new leadership and unit can gel and whether they can improve on last season’s middle-of-the-pack defensive rankings.
The Dolphins were particularly dominant as favorites last season, going 9-2 ATS, but their ability to perform against the league’s elite will determine whether they can make a serious playoff push in 2024.
